Urban Agriculture and Development: for and from Migrant and Refugee Women Conference
On the past 8th of November, AIDGLOBAL organized the Conference “Urban Agriculture and Development: for and from Migrant and Refugee Women” that marked the ending of the “Urbagri4Women” project. The Ceramic Museum of Sacavém hosted the conference that was attended by one hundred participants.
The conference had the presence of Bernardino Soares, President of the Municipality of Loures, André Rijo, President of the Municipality of Arruda dos Vinhos, Laura Rodrigues, Vice-president of the Municipality of Torres Vedras, Maria Manuel Ramalho, Alderman of the Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, Ananias Sigaúque, Council Ministry of the Embassy of Mozambique in Portugal, Eaduarda Marques, Regional Director of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth as well as local partners, volunteers and members of AIDGLOBAL.
The President of the Municipality of Loures, Bernardino Soares, the President of AIDGLOBAL, Susana Damasceno and the journalist Fernanda Freitas started the Conference. A second panel had the presence of Clara Vaz, Master in migration, and João Santos and Filomena Aivado both founders of Ecological Gardens Project and partners of the project as they created the agricultural gardens in the Terraços da Ponte Urbanization and the Refugee Center.
“We are a municipality with more than 120 nationalities and we value projects that aim integration and promote adequate living conditions for all either for subsistence or to help in the family income but foremost because it is a practice related to this territory” said the Mayor of Loures, Bernardino Soares.
In the last panel the international partners had their intervention: Fabiola Bedini from TAMAT has representative of the organization that coordinated the project, Elena Xeni from CARDET representative of the organization that developed the greenbook (available at http://bit.ly/2BXNwmY), the Manifesto and several resources developed that are good practices and recommendations for the integration of Migrant Women for municipalities and were developed in 7 countries of the organizations that took part in the project: Italy (TAMAT), Austria (SÜDWIND), Cyprus (CARDET), France (AMSED), Greece (ied), UK (GYROS) and Portugal (AIDGLOBAL).
Domingas Santos a beneficiary of the project shared her experience in creating and maintaining a vegetable garden in Terraços da Ponte Urbanization in an emotional testimony. All the participants received an agricultural kit thar had seeds and tools.
At AIDGLOBAL social shop participants could find small aromatized bottles of salt with spices from all around the world, an inspiration from the work developed by Migrant and Refugee Women that took part in this project.
At the end of the Conference a concert dinner served as a double celebration: the end of the “Urbagri4women” and the 13th anniversary of the foundation of AIDGLOBAL.
The music act was done by Malenga, musician and artist from Mozambique and by Sebastião Antunes, the mentor, composer and singer of the Portuguese folk band Quadrilha that also presented to the audience with anthem for AIDGLOBAL.
